Update disabling my Camera

One of the critical updates I downloaded in Feburaury or March has disable the computer from identifying my Vivitar Digital Camera. There is no need for a driver when using it with Windows XP. Atleast until now. If I reload windows, my camera works until the update is installed , then it shows that there is something plugged in to the usb port, but wont let me get the pictures off it. What can I do? Vivitar has not responded to my questions at all.

This can happen if you also have a scanner mounted. Windows only wants
one active TWAIN and if both the camera and scanner are mounted, one
will not work. ...from my experience.
