Backups.
Anyone with a computer that does not perform some sort of backups of the
data (documents, spreadsheets, pictures, music, email, contacts, internet
favorites/bookmarks, etc) that is important to them is being unwise - at
best. There is no valid excuse not to do backups. If you can afford the
computer and the Internet - you cannot afford not to have backups of your
important (to you) data.
In other words - yes - this can happen again. If not updates, then
malware... If not malware, then power surge. If not power surge, then
perhaps the hard drive just crashes.
Backups.
