Update disaster

Last week I downloaded updates and when I rebooted my computer it brought up
a black screen that said hit F11 to start recovery. I restarted my computer a
few times with the same results so finally I hit F11 but nothing happened. I
called the help line and they tried to restore the files but were
unsuccessful so they had me wipe the drive and reinstall windows. I had
problems with this and finally had to pay a technician to come here and
straighten out my computer. I lost a lot of information and other than some
sympathy from the people in India, Microsoft says it was my problem. They
said there is a note on the Update window that says to turn off your virus
program before you download updates. I have not been able to find that notice
and I had never had a problem downloading updates previously. I use the free
version of AVG and the only part I have been able to figure out how to turn
off is the Resident Shield.

Now I have more of these updates and I am afraid to download them for fear
that it might happen again.

I am retired and my wife is unemployed so we are on a tight budget and I
can't afford to pay someone to keep coming out to fix my computer.

How can I be sure this will not happen again!!!!!!!

Backups.

Anyone with a computer that does not perform some sort of backups of the
data (documents, spreadsheets, pictures, music, email, contacts, internet
favorites/bookmarks, etc) that is important to them is being unwise - at
best. There is no valid excuse not to do backups. If you can afford the
computer and the Internet - you cannot afford not to have backups of your
important (to you) data.

In other words - yes - this can happen again. If not updates, then
malware... If not malware, then power surge. If not power surge, then
perhaps the hard drive just crashes.

Backups.
