Oh dear - have you read through any other of the threads this month where
install fails - I know there are a lot, but............
In a nutshell, consensus would be to take it all very easy and no rush.
Get somebody to get a large pot of coffee ready.
Do a comprehensive clean of your machine with AV, antispy, malware etc and
use outside help for scanning if need be. As a new machine it should be
clean, but you never know - you must have done some network/emails.
Reboot. Set up a Restore Point in System Restore, though each install
should make its own restore point.
Some say disable AV and in partic Norton, go in and get the 50 odd DLs(only
get the security/critical ones-choose Express) and save to a file say called
'Updates' in your C:\ or to CD/DVD even better.
Once downloaded, disconnect from the net, disable all security stuff and in
partic Norton, stop all/any prog running.
If you have done the DL to disk, burn/write to disk - then open one at a
time and install by following the wizard. Reboot after 'each' install, then
check in Add/Remove to make sure they have taken.
If you have a problem with one, make a note of the KB number, reboot and
move to the next.
With a new machine, you tend to have lots of 'crapware' installed whether
you want it or not, and that could have an effect.
I would consider changing from Norton though. It is not considered very
popular in the groups. There are as good free AVs to be had.
Plus of course, you will also need, if not already get, antispy, malsoftware
remover and firewall. But thats a matter for a different group.
But do take a bit of time to read some of the threads - I see you are using
that terrible web interface - think about using a newsreader - you must have
OE on your system.
Not all the above has worked - most of it seems to have - there have been
slight variations in parts of the whole process to get them all downloaded.
Or you can go straight into MS WU Home, select Express for the
security/criticals, select them all and download, as I can only think of
reading one who had a problem with a new system - most have been after
reinstall of XP or upgrade from SP1 to SP2, followed by the 50+ updates.
Have you validated yet - been offered WGA/WGAN - you may want to consider if
you want them, so it may be a good idea to check through what is on offer
from WU.
If you get a problem, come back, but in this thread, please.
Rgds
