If you click on the download update icon what happens? Try the right click
as well.

Hi Kevin & FEI, I'm having similar problems but I have cable connection. It's
been downloading for almost 24 hrs. and is only 55% done. I used the Tray
ICON and selected only critical updates. When I click on the Icon it only
gives the option to "Pause. Nothing else. Please let me know if this is
normal. I just recently went from running Windows98 to installing Win 2000
Professional. So I haven't ever done an update. Can I set it up to run Auto
updates in the future so it won't take so long? Sorry for the long posting
but I'm kind of new to this. I've never had anything take so long to
download. Maybe next time I should go to the Windows update Icon on my "Start
Icon"
Thanks for any help, Debbie

You haven't disclosed your OS so it is difficult to give you advice.
We also don't know which version of WU you are using or if your
problem is associated with AU.
If your OS is XP there is a good chance it is WUv5.
Provided you aren't using a Win9x OS see if the following ideas
get you anywhere.

Open Task Manager and see is there is a wuauclt.exe listed
in the Processes tab. (You may have to check Show Processes
from all users to see this particular task.)
If so, open the WindowsUpdate.log and see what the last message
is which is associated with that task's PID. Chances are that will
explain why the task is stuck.

Post the log messages from the complete last session (as determined
by the timestamp and the PID) if you need more help.
