Update Error 0x80244021 - No proxy - direct connection to internet

I keep receiving this error and i have looked through the other posts and
they keep going on about ISA server. The problem is i am getting this error
but i have a direct connection to the internet (no proxy). Here is
windowupdate.log file if anyone can help that would be great.

I am getting the same error. I reported the indident but no reply yet. I
investigated the a bit and concludet that it might be about the group policy
settings.

If your in a company network check whether your admins changed some settings
about Windows Update service.

Run:
mmc C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsop.msc

and check "Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Update" nodes.

Try to find out what all is happening in directory SoftwareDistribution.
One way to get a summary of activity in there is to use this command
pipeline starting from there:

D:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution>dir/s/od | findstr "Directory 2004-09-21"

Note: you will have to modify the findstr argument to match the output
of dir commands on your system. The only reason I use the findstr
at all is because I don't know of any options or tools which can give me
the full path with the filename; so use whatever tools you have that work
for you to do the same job.

FWIW after cleaning up my SoftwareDistribution subdirectories
according to Torgeir's instructions I believe my AU is now working
correctly. The list of files I see added and changed after an update
are: ReportingEvents.log
DataStore\Logs\edb00005.log
SelfUpdate\wusetup.cab
WuRedir\9482F4B4-E343-43B6-B170-9A65BC822C77\wuredir.cab

BTW that list is what I see several visits after the cleanup.
The list you might see first visit after a cleanup would be larger
and involve more of the other subdirectories.

Additionally doing extract /d on each of those .cab files showed
that there were no files there which could be installed. There is
an .xml file in the WuRedir directory but I would only start considering
it as a factor if I was getting a sign of error. (That .xml file might be
a starting point for you if you still have a symptom after doing a cleanup.)
