Have tried several metods to solve "failed" updates. That includes items
list by PA Bear as follows: "How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft
Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

Windows version? IE version? Which updates are failing to install?

Did you find "Error 0x80070246" (verbatim) listed in your Windows Update
log?

Windows: Vista Home Premium 32bit.
Failed Updates: Update for Windows Vista (KB931836)
Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista
(KB935652)
Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)

The error code come from the Windows Update window as follows:
"Code 80070246 Get help"
The get help does not lead to any fixes. Also, searching the error code
does not produce a solution (only the post from "fernando" that you replied
too).
WindowsUpdate log shows the following:

Post a few recent lines of the log that reference "Code 80070246 Get help",
please, Mike. Otherwise...

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from
Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no-charge for
support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call,
clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the
update's KB number (e.g., KB931678).

Sorry for the delay. As for the log file (posted earlier) there is no
reference to the error code 80070246. That reference only comes from the
windows update screen after it attempts to do the updates. Unless your
talking aboput a different log other then WindowsUpdate.log . Cheers

Mike,

See if there's another windowsupdate.log located in

%userprofile%\appdata\local\Microsoft\windows\wind owsupdate.log

Go to Start, in the Start Search line type in %userprofile%
Your UserProfile folder should now appear in the left frame
Open it and then drill down to the windowsupdate.log
Find the date where these updates are listed in the log:

Update for Windows Vista (KB931836)
Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista

(KB93565) Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)

Copy&paste that section including any error codes into your reply, please.

<cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
F:\>set /a c = 0x246
582
F:\>net helpmsg %c%
582 is not a valid Windows network message number.
</cmd_output>

What does Vista report with net helpmsg 582

Perhaps this?

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681388.aspx
(Live Search for
582 intitle:codes site:microsoft.com
)

<quote>
ERROR_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER
582 An illegal character was encountered. For a multi-byte character set this includes a lead byte without a succeeding trail
byte. For the Unicode character set this includes the characters 0xFFFF and 0xFFFE.

</quote>

If so, perhaps the download was corrupt.
Is there an alternate way of getting it?
Try getting the same thing from the Windows Update Catalog?

Good luck

After uninstalling Vista sp1 RC1 ,in preparation for installing R2, windows
update ceased working - generating the error code 80070246.
The windows version I currently have listed is 6.0.6000 . All the updates
from the uninstall updates page are gone. I'm informed that I have no updates
installed. Going to the download center and grabbing standalone update
packages simply results in Vista informing me that " This package does not
apply to your system" .

All in all, it's a tad frustrating at the moment. I have a PING 2.0 copy of
the system in question, so reinstalling is not really that much of a problem,
but I've tried to uninstall SP1 twice already, and it generated the same
problems both times.

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32 with 4 gigs of ram and an amd64x2 cpu on an
asus crosshair board. I have no problems connecting to anything, but vista
seems to be blind to that simple fact.
I'm not connecting through a proxy .
When running sfc /scannow, which is one of a few published solutions to the
80070246 problem, I get the following error message " Windows Resource
Protection could not perform the requested operation" .

Including a small bit of my windowsupdate.log :
