Update Errors: BITS, Unknown, SP1 and others

I have a computer with Vista installed (not upgraded from XP). I usually do
the upgrade automatically. However, the latest upgrades (around 12-1) totally
messed up my system. They made all sound on the computer compeltely disappear
and made graphics over the internet/games sllooooooowwwwww.

The first problem was "unknown error 80070002" which I follwed the
troubleshooting info to fix. Then I got a BITS error 80246007. So I followed
the info to fix that! THEN the windows update told me it needed to update, so
I did. After all of that, the problems still weren't fixed.

I finally did a system restore to the 20th of November and turned off my
automatic updating, since the computer worked fine before the updates!

I checked my update history and the two latest failed ones were Update
KB959108 and Vista Service Pack 1 KB936330.

Can anyone shed any light? I'm somewhat techy-illiterate.
Thanks!
AmyLou

1. Using System Restore to "undo" an update is not a wise idea: Better to
uninstall the update in question.

2. KB959108 is an option but Recommended update. While I'd doubt it was the
cause of your problems, you could configure Automatic Updates such that
you'd have to approve which updates are downloaded and installed, in which
case you could "hide" this update.

3. If Vista SP1 was offered by Automatic Updates, one assumes the machine's
finally ready to install it: Unlimited installation and compatibility
support for Vista SP1 is available at no charge through 18 Mar-09
