1. Using System Restore to "undo" an update is not a wise idea: Better to
uninstall the update in question.
2. KB959108 is an option but Recommended update. While I'd doubt it was the
cause of your problems, you could configure Automatic Updates such that
you'd have to approve which updates are downloaded and installed, in which
case you could "hide" this update.
3. If Vista SP1 was offered by Automatic Updates, one assumes the machine's
finally ready to install it: Unlimited installation and compatibility
support for Vista SP1 is available at no charge through 18 Mar-09
