Update errors - various

My son, who's living in Romania, had problems with his PC which, after much
trial and tribulation, I came to the conclusion that a repair install was
best way forward. I talked him through this and all went remarkably well.
On startup I suggested he went to the Update site to download and install
outstanding updates.

He first performed an 'Express' update which indicated the need to download
and install SP3.

1. Error 0x8007005 when trying to install SP3; KB936929.

He next performed a 'Custom' Update which he said indicated over 100 updates
required. He undertook to download and install. 6 updates failed..........

2. Error 0xD00E4104 when trying to install two Security Updates; KB923561
and 956572, and one Critical update for Windows XP; KB886185.

3. Error 0x20000001 when trying to install Update for Windows XP; KB922582

4. Error 0x802440139 when trying to install Update for Windows Media Format
11 SDK; KB929399

5. Error 0x80070645 whern trying to install .NET Framework 3.5 Service
Pack 1; (KB951847)

Appreciate help in trying to resolve on his behalf.

Send this to your son:

Backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a(nother) Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that
isn't brand-new or hasn't been freshly formatted:
