Update.exe out of control

Update.exe has been runnning on my system (XP SP1) for 30 hours and I cannot
stop it from the task manager. Have re-booted and turned off automatic
updates and still update.exe runs.
Any ideas?

Determine what patches are needed download them manually, disable the Windows
Update Service, and BITS, then boot to safe mode and install the patches, and
delete the contents of \windows\softwaredistribution. Restart normally and
enable and start the services.

This is how we got around the problem, not sure if it will come back when
the August patches are released.
