Update.exe running continuously on XP Pro machines

Anyone got a solution for this? Update.exe is running (almost) continuously
on several machines I oversee. It shows up in task manager and eats up all
the CPU usage and then stops, and restarts - just keeps going until I kill
the Auto-Update service.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Download the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt408.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions.
3) Disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDoc...SysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode and shutdown as many applications as possible
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any System Restore preferences,
(e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) Create a new Restore point

Can you send me your %windir%\windowsupdate.log file?

Thanks.

I have this too on a number of machines as do my colleagues. It's widespread
but MS aren't yet owning up to an issue.

See if your windowsupdate.log has the same sort of apparent loop
in it that I analysed for poster "mike g" last month:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...e-834b53020f7b

My suggestion then was to see if using a customized install
(e.g. one patch at a time) would let him avoid the problem.

Good luck

Yes it does and you can circumvent by installing updates one at a time. Not
very practical though, I have it on several machines.

I tried stopping the Update service and deleting the entire contents of the
c:\windows\softwaredowload.
To no avail, it started looping again on the first install.

Can't understand why MS is owning up to this issue. It must be causing
significant waste of bandwidth.
