Update.exe unexpected error

I was in the middle of an update last thursday, when the power went out and
back on again in 5 - 10 seconds and despite having a surge protector, the
Update. EXE file seems to be corrupted and wont allow updates to be
installed. Everytime I try to install the update the message is Windows has
encountered and unexpected problem with Update.exe.

I have been advised to do non destructive system restore and I was wondering
if there is an easier solution to fixing the file - like replacing this one
with the correct file, without system restore?

Please advise

Sounds like your update got corrupted.

Remove WU downloads from the temporary folder:-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any downloaded updates.

They would have been removed eventually in approximately 10 days.
