After what has seemed like hours of work--well, it was hours--doing all the
fixes, register files, etc., etc., to no avail, I decided to download the
update files individually from
www.Microsoft.com/downloads.
When I tried to install them manually, on each one I got the message that
"branches.inf could not be copied" even though branches.inf was found in the
install directory. I then Googled "cannot copy branches.inf" and found a
discussion that said to locate the branches.inf file in the C:\windows\inf
directory and uncheck the read-only box (it was checked--don't know how or
why).
The updates then installed seamlessly.
1. Summary: Go to \windows\inf, find branches.inf and uncheck the read only
box. It's that simple.
2. If you have a problem getting to Windows Update itself, try using the
proxy fixes discussed in a thread below. Find in the registry the local
machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/internet
settings/connections and delete the key: winhttpsettings. Then go to Start,
Run, cmd, and type proxycfg -d and you should be able to get to the Update
site.
