auto update failed
I also tried directly download the corresponding item and install and still
failed,

what else can I do?
the Xp pro PC is sp3 with all the latest updates

Did KB961620 and KB960715 install?

office 2003 has sp3 applied before this. and I can't find KB961620 from
microsoft download site nor from the pc's update history

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection (cf.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum.
