Update fail, unable to boot normally

I was installing the recommened updates this morning, and lost power. Since
then, then, I am only able to start in safe mode. I have tried going into
the update page to see if re-installing whatever updates would help. But I
am unable to open the page (error msg 0x800c). I have tried a system
restore, and that doesn't help any. Suggestions are appreciated, as I have
been at this several hours. Thanks!

"Salena",

Assuming you are the same person as "Update fail, unable to boot normally",
if you have Windows XP, you can go back in time on your PC. Here is how you
do this:

1. As you boot the machine, press F8 to enter Safe Mode.
2. Log into the local Administrator account.
3. Click Start
4. Click Run
5. type: msconfig
6. Click OK or hit the <Enter> key.
7. When the System Configuration Utility opens, make sure you are looking at
the General tab.
8. Click the "Launch System Restore" button. This will open a wizard.
9. On the calendar in the wizard, select a date that was before the day of
the power outage.
10. Click OK through the wizard and reboot. This should bring you back to a
working and stable Windows XP.

See if that works for you, and let us know.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Pat, I tried one more restore and still have the problem when I reboot it
only goes to the safe mode screen. The system still boots to the XP Pro
screen and the blue bar looks to be starting normal but then locks up and
screen turns black and the computer stops booting. Please assist.

"Brian,"

If you think you have spent far too much time on it, and that your data is
unrecoverable, then a reinstall of XP Pro is a relatively quick and painless
fix to the predicament. Gather a few things you need before you begin:
- Windows XP Professional CD, and its associated Product Key.
- Any drivers that you installed from CD or floppy for ANY possible hardware
not on the Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List:
http://www.microsoft.com/hcl, but get the driver from the manufacturer's
website.
- ISP connection username, password, and software (if necessary).

Now you are ready, but remember this:
***WARNING - You will be formatting the hard drive, so you will lose ALL
data on this drive***
***The only way to save this data is to back it up somewhere OTHER than this
drive (CD-R, floppy, etc.)***

Here is the procedure:
1. Backup all of your data by burning it on CD or copying it to another
computer or hard drive that will not be formatted (you may not have this
option).
2. Put in the Windows XP Professional Operating System CD ( make sure this
is not Windows XP Plus)
3. Restart the machine
4. Press a key when it says "Press Any Key to boot from CD..."
5. Format the drive and create a partition
6. Follow the prompts to create a new installation of the OS.
7. Once the OS installation is complete, DO NOT yet connect to the Internet.
8. Now install any Windows XP Service Packs you have on CD (I suggest you
order this from the website if you do not have it.)
8. Install the Applications that were on the machine before.
9. Now retrieve the data that you saved in step 1, and put it in the
appropriate folders on the new partition.
10. Now set up your Internet Connection.
11. Visit Windows Update, and download EVERY critical update.
12. Repeat step 11 and rebooting as required until complete.

Please write back to this thread and let us know how this goes!

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
