Update failing

Sorry, the background information needed to give a full explanation of my
problem is lengthy:
1) Some months ago, my PC recently crashed.
2) I had the HDD replaced.
3) The HDD installer also installed XP
4) IMPORTANT - I successfully updated all service patches myself. I updated
successfully a few times since.
5) Two days ago, I tried updating recent patches
6) The MS site verified me OK and downloaded
7) I decided not to instal half a dozen of the patches but successfully ran
the malicious software tool
8) I tried installing updates yesterday and received unhelpful message from
every patch "failed"
9) Today, I tried downloading patches direct from MS - I needed verification
to download on patch and passed OK.
10) I tried manually installing the first patch and received the message
indicating pa561401.cab is missing, install original disk to drive d:\ (this
is my CD drive)
11) I put my Windows CD in.... same Window popped up again and so on...
12) I did a system search for 'pa561401.cab'. It refuses to show its ugly
head either on my PC or in my XP original disk.
13) searches of the internet indicate the lack of pa561401.cab is a
regitration problem. I am a registered user and this was verified by the MS
site.
14) Does anyone know how to extract 'pa561401.cab' from my original CD or
otherwise work around the problem.

The file pa561401.cab should be on your Office installation CD, not your
Windows CD.
