Update Fails & IE6 Update Fails

If I try to update Win Xp, I continually receive the webpage located at this
URL:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...&&thankspage=5

I have a registered version of WinXP Pro SP2. The tick boxes are greyed out
on my update selection preferences in the Security Center. I surfed over to
McAfee last night, their site tells me I must be running IE5.5 or better to
use their site, well, I am. My web hosting company site tells me the same
thing when I go to try to edit my website, that I am not using 5.5 or better.
Per my browser it says I have Version:
3.02900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519IS, 128-Bit, then shows my Product ID. I
downloaded IE6setup.exe to try to re-install and it tells me I have a newer
version running and setup could not continue.

I tried re-installing a couple security updates, etc. I have saved on my
machine and some told me that the "RPC Server" was not running and the others
told me: "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make
sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer."

Ok, I have half of the hair left on my scalp....either this PC or my MS
software is heading to the target range very soon.

VERY frustrated.

PS Please let me know if I need or should post this in any other discussion
groups.

Thanks!

I found this - worth a look...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;234272
Check the registry setting mentioned in the above and make sure they match your actual version.

If you're running two firewalls, XP's and another? Try turning one of them off.

Thx, I will go take a look. No, only one FW, Sygate. Correction to my IE
Version number in my original post (replace that 1st digit 3 with a 6). This
whole thing is so confusing to me and has about drove me out of my mind due
to things and deadlines I have to meet. Thanks Unk and others who may submit
their expertise before I am put into the Looneytoon Inn.

My reg. was ok, had the commas in place. But that link was for IE5.0, guess
it may still apply in that sense. There is a sub-folder within that key named
"AuthorizedCDFPrefix" with no values, etc. The stubpath leads to
systemroot/system32/ie4uinit.exe. The version of that is 6.00.2900.2180. But
there's alot of other stuff in there that has version 5.1.2600.2180, would
this have anything to do with this problem? Also, my OS %systemroot% path
isn't the norm, it's actually C:\Windows\Temp\ instead of C:\Windows. Would
this have anything to do with it too?

Possibly, several systems I looked at had no references within that key to 5.1.anything
They all had just the following:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}]
@="Internet Explorer 6"
"ComponentID"="BASEIE40_W2K"
"IsInstalled"=dword:00000001
"Locale"="en"
"StubPath"="%SystemRoot%\system32\ie4uinit.exe "
"Version"="6,0,2900,2180"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}\AuthorizedCDFPrefix]
"http://www.microsoft.com"=""

I would export the entire key so you could replace it if necessary, then delete the extra
components of the key until all you have left it the above. Reboot and see if the problem is
corrected. (In the left pane, click the {89820200-..... item, File. Export)

Also, The OS %systemroot% path should point to "C:\Windows"

Anyone want to tackle this with Unk? Thought we'd have a slew of options to
try by now )

That's a symptom of a misleading User-Agent string,
either incorrectly coded in the registry or interfered with
by a third-party on the outbound path (such as a firewall).

Here's an excerpt from a previous post with more information

<excerpt>

That's a symptom of a problem with your User-Agent string

<title>KB817144 - "Thank You for Your Interest in Windows Update"
Message When You Connect to the Windows Update Web Site</title>

If you need more help post the results from entering this script fragment
in an IE Address bar:

javascript:navigator.userAgent

(It's case sensitive so pasting it may be best.)

Another possibility is that the User-Agent is being prepared properly
but is being interfered with when it is sent (e.g. some security products
do that). Here is a link to a site which could help you check for that case:

< http://grc.com/default.htm >

(Choose Browser Headers once you allow it to Proceed.)

</excerpt>

Try this link instead

http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx

(Courtesy Eric Lawrence in
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/04/27/412813.aspx
)

Copy and paste your User-Agent: string from there.

That way we will at least know if I'm on the right track
and whether it is necessary to try to explain to you further
how to deal with that problem.
