I receive the Windows Update Error number 0x800A0046 even
when running as adminstrator. The UPDATE help screen says
this is due to limited account permissions. Could any of
the recent IE patches have caused this? I haven't changed
any of my settings since the last time I updated.

I have the same problem on both PCs... And based on the pop up help menu, I
looked at the status of my user account and none of them belong to a limited
user nor guest account.

Any suggestion?

Hi folks,

after looking around and NOT choosing to turn off my firewall ;-) , I found
this and it worked for me:

Set the Security Descriptor
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type cmd.
4. Click OK.
5. At the command prompt type sc sdset wuausrv
DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLO CRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRP WPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)
6. Press Enter, you should receive a "Success" message
7. At the command prompt type Exit to close the command prompt window
8. Try Windows Update again

Hope it will work for you too. I am a bit ashamed I tried this without
knowing what it was, but it did work...

Cheers

Raphael

I also get this error, but I think for a different reason. And the fix
below doesn't work for me.

My IT guy has enforced a group policy that doesn't allow me to modify the
wuauserv service. I get "access denied" and "invalid permission" errors.
This is because they want us to not turn off auto-update. Well, I don't
want to turn it off either. But it turns out that I can simply go into the
registry and disable it just by tweaking a few settings.

So where is the registry setting that prevents me from modifying the
wuauserv service?

Thanks,
TT

Ok see here is what I did to fix this problem on my machine. I hope everyone
has the same success.

1. Goto HK_C_U\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\W indows Update and
deleted the key
2. Goto HK_L_M\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\W indows Update and
deleted the key
3. Open HIJACKTHIS and deleted this: DPF:
{6414512B-B978-451D-A0D8-FCFDF33E833C} (WUWebControl Class) -
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...?1093475842247

4. Log off system and goto Windows Update... allow the active x control to
install and then run windows setup install file when prompted.

hope this works for all of you.

Thanks, Sol. Unfortunately that made no difference. More info...

When I use ComputerManage-->Services, or just "sc", I get error #5 and text
that says I don't have privileges to use the wuauserv service. But I'm in
the Administrators group and can do anything else I want to on the machine.

BTW, windows update v4 works just fine. Unfortunately it's no longer my
default update site, so I have to manually access it. Any way I can simply
uninstall v5? Is the fact that v4 works a clue?

I'm sure there's a registry entry somewhere that disallows access. But I
just can't find it...

Click Start > Run
Type "cmd" (w/o quotes)
Press Enter
At the command prompt copy and paste the following command:

sc sdset wuauserv
DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLO CRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CC
LCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

All in one line, you should get a "Succeeded" message.

Restart the system and then try Windows Update again.

This fix initially did not work for me. I then uninstalled SP2, reinstalled
SP2, checked that 0x800A0046 still occurred, tried this fix again, and this
time it worked. No possible explanation, but hey, it worked and I'm thankful
for this group.
