Update fails to install

Recently installed new hard drive and Windows XP Pro. Have a huge number of
updates (60+) and only a few will download at a time, sometimes not at all.
I've tried all the Auto Update options and when I choose to manually install,
I get web page error msg. What can I do? Lots of updates using dialup service
takes alot of time and even more when updates fail. Thanks for any advice.

This is to elaborate more on my problem. My Dell laptop uses the same OS
(Windows XP) as my Gateway, but my Dell has no problem with downloading
updates. The Gateway starts downloading, but after downloading two or three
updates it seems to just forget about downloading more. I know some updates
need to be installed before others and that doesn't seem to be the problem.
It's more like I run out of disk space or something (not likely with over 50
gigs available). I recently downloaded some software (nearly 60 mb) without a
problem (took a long time, but no hangups). After trying to download updates
since Monday (four days), I've still got another 25% to go and no idea how
many are left or what they are. My update history has me at 40 or so
downloads completed, but since I can't access the updates web page, the
remaining downloads are a mystery. I've tried turning off automatic updates
and manually downloading and installing updates, but the web page is
unavailable and it usually takes half an hour or more to get that message.
Could my browser (MS Explorer 6) or something else be limiting the amount of
bytes I can download at a time? Hope this explains my problem a bit more. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.

So, Scott, you want to get the Gateway fully updated on dial up.
You have no access to the Windows Update website on that box.
Given an error number and some effort you could access WU,
but getting fully updated interests you more than getting to WU,
so it's a question of running Automatic Updates to completion.

What you could do would be to give BITS the go ahead not to lurk
in the background by processing idle tasks with this command:

rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

Copy and paste it in the Run box. It takes a while to finish,
but you're a patient guy. Did it work?

I had fun figuring the fix and how to pitch it. Reverting from rcn's
moderate 7Gb/s (they also offer 10) to dial-up will be harsh, but
looks like a sure thing in my near future. Thanks for the report.

Major correction: seven megabits, not gigabits. Brain went tilt.
