update fails

I have beng en experiencing a problem with windows update after clicking the
Express which gets this "The site cannot continue because one or more of
these Windows services is not running:".etc.

The usual ways to correct this and I've tried both help frm sympatico help
but he couldn't figure out what to do?

I just bought this used Satalite Tashiba M40 laptop runnig with XP Pro

The services required are Automatic Updates, which must have the Startup
type set to Automatic, and the Background Intelligent Transfer service
(BITS), which can be set to Manual for the Startup type.

Please try another attempt at updating. When/if it fails, close Internet
Explorer.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is
being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure of.
