I have a genuine copy of Windows XP. It has passed the validations many
times during previous Windows updates. However, there is currently an update
on my PC at the moment and each time I run it, it locks up half way through
and I have to re-boot my PC.

When my PC re-boots it then says that my PC is running a non-genuine copy of
windows and locks up again.

The only thing I can do is to re-boot into safe mode with command prompt and
run system restore.

As soon as I am back into Windows after the restore I am prompted with the
same 'updates are now ready to install' prompt.

My machine has not got a virus and I AM running a genuine copy of Windows.

I think the problem is the update that locks up half way through the install
every time.

Can anyone help please?

If you are referring to update 905474, then please download and
install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

No it does not solve my problem - the install file fails during the install
and locks my PC up. If I reboot I am back to the taskbar prompt telling me
to install the update again.

If I validate my copy online is says validated ok but still that bloody
taskbar icon tells me to upadate and when I do it locks up.

I have also tried all of this:

Locate the file: C:\ Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data\data.dat and delete it. Reboot, send your
browser to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click "Validate Windows".

If that doesn't work please try the following:

Open internet explorer, click "tools" then "manage add-ons" then find the
Windows Genuine Advantage ActiveX control and put it as "ENABLE". If the
setting is only allowed to be changed by administrators, then you must go to
your C:\windows\system32 and DELETE the LegitCheckControl.dll file. Then go
to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/dow...displaylang=en
and revalidate. That will reload the DLL file correctly. Reboot your computer
after this.

Or try the direct 905474 download, then install:
http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/...763&SiteID=25#

If you are referring to update 905474, then please download and
install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

If I run a report I get this:

WGA Diagnostic Data (1.5.0530.2):

--------------------

Genuine Validation Status: Genuine

Windows Product Key: *****-*****-7JKTK-B872H-H7QC3

Check that the thing you downloadeded is complete and not corrupt.
Right-click the downloaded exe and select Properties, then tab Digital
Signature. The digital signature should have a signing time of
02 June 2006 20:44:51 UTC

or adjust for your time-zone. If the digital signature is missing or not
valid, then empty your Temporary Internet Files and try the download again.

What sort of internet connection to do you have? Cable? Dial-up? DSL?

When the lock-up occurred, were you online to the internet or offline?

Can you post the section of C:\WINDOWS\WgaNotify.log that relates to the
failed installation attempt?

You stopped the copy short of the line identifying the installed WGA
version: that would be useful it it were listed.
