PeterE,
See if this post helps resolve the issue : How To Fix Windows Update (BITS) [Newly Edited] http://castlecops.com/t106642-How_To...ly_Edited.html It was written for XP Pro SP2. All registry entries may not be similar to XP HE. You're welcome, Peter. In the WINDOWS directory is the WindowsUpdate.log
( note that it is all one word ). Open it with Notepad and copy and paste the last 20 or so lines into your next post, please. Meanwhile, give this a shot : 1. Locate Automatic Updates in the list of Services and double click on it d.) Click the STOP button and then click OK e.) Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service in the list of Services and double click on it f.) Click the STOP button and then click OK g.) Close all windows back to the Desktop 2. Locate the Software Distribution folder in C:\WINDOWS by: a.) Go to Start and click on My Computer b.) Double click on Local Disk (C ![]() c.) Double click on the WINDOWS Folder d.) Click once on the SoftwareDistribution folder 3. Right click on the SoftwareDistribution folder and choose Rename from the menu list 4. Rename the folder to SoftwareDistributionOLD 5. Close all windows back out to your Desktop 6. Start Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Transfer Service by: a.) Click on Start and then Control Panel b.) Double click on Administrative Tools and then Services c.) Locate Automatic Updates in the list of Services and double click on it d.) Click the START button and then click OK e.) Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service in the list of Services and double click on it f.) Click the START button and then click OK g.) Close all windows back to the Desktop Revisit Windows Update and see if the updates will install now. Thank you for those suggestions, MowGreen. I have stopped AU and BITS as you
suggested and renamed the the Software Distribution folder before restarting AU and BITS but I am still unable to install any updates. I get the 80072F78 error message. 0x80072F78 indicates that "something" is blocking Windows Update.
Suggest you check 3rd party privacy software since you've already attempted to do the updating with no firewall or AV running. Popup blockers, cookie blockers, etc. can cause this. There is a program called "Bugoff" that can also cause this error. Have you added the Windows Update site to the Trusted sites zone ? http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (Note: The https is correct) http://download.windowsupdate.com OR, we could try uninstalling KB 842773 from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, then download it from : http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en Choose Save, do not choose to Run it, boot to Safe Mode, and install it from there. Restart the system to normal Windows mode, and then revisit Windows Update to see if the original installation registered itself correctly. This way you can determine if the installed AV had an adverse effect on it. Suggest clearing IE's cache, cookies, and History prior to visiting Windows Update. You can temporarily move any desired cookies to another location if you do not want to delete them. Thanks for those suggestions, MowGreen. I'm not knowingly running any popup
or cookie blockers. I have even disabled popup blocker in IE. I will make a thorough search of Processes in Task Manager to make sure nothing is running that I don't know about. I don't see KB842773 in Add/Remove Programs and I do have 'Show Updates' checked. KB842773 gives instructions on how to deinstall BITS without doing it thru Add/Remove programs. I will try that and reinstall in Safe Mode as you suggest. I really an getting confused, MowGreen. I can't see KB842773 in Add& Remove
Programs. Neither can I see a reference to it in the Registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB842773. On that basis I downloaded 842773 again 'manually' but when I tried to install it I got the error message, "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update." I am running XPHE SP2. I have veryfied that the following files are located in the %systemroot%\system32\bits folder. Bitsprx2.dll Bitsprx3.dll Qmgr.dll Qmgrprxy.dll Winhttp.dll Xpob2res.dll Can you suggest what I should try next? I appreciate your help. If you have XPsp2 you should not have been able to install 842773. Notice that it is not in the list of systems it applies to. Use the file manifest in the KB article and tell us what versions of those modules that you have. Unless you force installed it you should have versions which supersede all those listed. > > Suggestions or advice would be appreciated > > PeterE > HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Thank you for your response, Robert. I installed the BITS 2 update
(KB842773) some months before I installed SP2. I have checked the file manifest in 842773 and confirm that all the files listed are installed but with a later version number, 2180. I assume from the later number that the files were replaced by SP2 files. MS Tech Support suggest I may have an application running that is blocking the download and installation. I copy below a log file of processes that I currently have running. Do you see anything there that could be preventing a download? rocess PID CPU Description Company System Idle Process 0 97.22 System 4 smss.exe 628 Windows NT Session Manager Microsoft Corporation csrss.exe 748 Client Server Runtime Process Microsoft Corporation winlogon.exe 776 Windows NT Logon Application Microsoft Corporation services.exe 820 Services and Controller app Microsoft Corporation svchost.exe 992 Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Microsoft Corporation svchost.exe 1052 Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Microsoft Corporation svchost.exe 1156 Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Microsoft Corporation wscntfy.exe 1240 Windows Security Center Notification App Microsoft Corporation wuauclt.exe 3912 Automatic Updates Microsoft Corporation svchost.exe 1248 Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Microsoft Corporation svchost.exe 1304 Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Microsoft Corporation spoolsv.exe 1420 Spooler SubSystem App Microsoft Corporation CTSVCCDA.EXE 1556 Creative Service for CDROM Access Creative Technology Ltd gearsec.exe 1580 gearsec GEAR Software alg.exe 392 Application Layer Gateway Service Microsoft Corporation VetMsg.exe 3152 CA Antivirus Realtime Messaging Service Computer Associates International, Inc. lsass.exe 832 LSA Shell (Export Version) Microsoft Corporation explorer.exe 944 Windows Explorer Microsoft Corporation carpserv.exe 1676 carpserv Conexant Systems, Inc. atiptaxx.exe 1840 ATI Desktop Control Panel ATI Technologies, Inc.
