I recently did a XP CD repair using the existing installation as the basis
rather than the disk. After completing I find that it blew off my SP 2. Two
part problem:

Part 1: In attempting to do an MS Update, I received the following text in
addition to the error number above: "the website has encountered a problem
and connot display the page you are trying to view'....then it gives some
tips which don't help at all.

Part 2: Sidestepping the above, I downloaded the SP 2 executable directly.
When I fired it up it installed almost all the way and then came up with:
Acess Denied. I was then left with only one option....uninstall the partial
install of SP2. My local Tech thinks that I have a bug in the system that
denies access. Thinking that I could work around this part by going into
SAFE MODE as Administrator I repeated the SP2 install with the same denial
near the end.

So there you have it, any ideas or do I have to subject it to the Tech bench
for a week or so??

Thanks,

Warren

I'll try and deal with the 0x8007005 issue:

"Error 0x80070005: Access is denied"

Please also have a look at: "Access denied" section here:
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2
and also:-
You receive an "Access is denied" error message when you try to install
Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873148
if nothing there helps try Microsoft Support at
http://support.microsoft.com - in the assisted support options in the middle
of the page.

See my post on "Windows Update error FOUND!!"

I recommend repairing Windows Installer by following KB315346, then doing a
WinXP upgrade/in place to repair WMI.
Perform Windows Update, but install ONLY Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (which is
automatice anyway!), just don't install any patches yet...
Once you're satisfied the system is stable, make a Restore Point
Then apply all security updates/patches EXCEPT for KB902400!
Retest your system...if OK...make a new Restore Point.

I sure hope this helps!
