Please state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1) when posting to
this newsgroup. Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? Are you attempting to install these updates via Automatic Updates or manually via Windows Update? Is Automatic Updates enabled? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? Running Vista HP SP1 with IE-8. All previous updates installed.
This is a new and sudden problem. Never had a failed update through all Vista Betas, RC, or final versions. Attempting installation via Auto Update which is enabled. Avast anti-virus and Ad-Aware anti-spyware installed. Linksys WRT-110 router. No Norton or McAfee app ever installed. Did download and install Java update yesterday. Could this affect updating? Thanks for your help...will try your suggestions and let you know the results "PA Bear [MS MVP]" <> wrote in message news:... > Please state your full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1) when posting to > this newsgroup. > > Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? > > Are you attempting to install these updates via Automatic Updates or > manually via Windows Update? When (date) did you install IE8, Harry? Did you disable Avast and Ad-Aware
AE's Guard & Ad-Watch prior to installing IE8? Did the recent entries in WindowsUpdate.log list any failure error codes? Have you attempted to download/install the remaining updates manually? Have you opened a free support incident? Harry Sherman wrote: > Running Vista HP SP1 with IE-8. All previous updates installed. > This is a new and sudden problem. I installed the final version of IE-8 over the beta version on 1 April via
Windows Update...but after going back to WUP to retrieve the date, I encountered a puzzling fact. The IE-8 entry shows "pending" instead of "successful" with an error code of 80242014, Since Vista reported a successful installation and configuration went smoothly, I had assumed the final version was installed OK. But now I'm not sure what I have....the version shown is 8.0.6001,18702. As for your other questions: No, I did not disable Avast or Ad-Aware prior to IE-8 DL. The error codes reported in WUP History is the same for all the failures: 80071A91. And I have not tried a manual download of the failed updates. I'm afraid excerpts from one of the installation logs aren't going to help
us much here. What about errors in WindowsUpdate.log (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093)? >> I installed the final version of IE-8 over the beta version on 1 April >> via >> Windows Update...but after going back to WUP to retrieve the date, I >> encountered a puzzling fact. The IE-8 entry shows "pending" instead of >> "successful" with an error code of 80242014 I'm afraid I don't get a warm, fuzzy feeling about the above, Harry, and it may be related to your current problem. May we assume you've rebooted since upgrading from IE8 Beta to IE8 Final on 01 Apr-09? Any chance you installed Vista SP1 while IE8 Beta was installed? 1. Comment: Your updates problem and that "pending" status for the IE8
installation may be related to Ad-Aware's Guard and Ad-Watch "system protections." 2. Repost: >> ...May we assume you've rebooted >> since upgrading from IE8 Beta to IE8 Final on 01 Apr-09? Any chance you >> installed Vista SP1 while IE8 Beta was installed? 3. Also please confirm that you are NOT running Vista SP2 Beta!! 4. Back to the Windows Update problem, 0x80071a91 is an example of a pertinent error, at least for diagnostic purposes. 0x80071a91 = ERROR_RM_NOT_ACTIVE "Transaction support within the specified file system resource manager is not started or was shutdown due to an error." First, try the five-step fix here: http://blogs.vertigo.com/personal/al...s-updates.aspx If no joy... Start a free Windows Update support incident request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527 For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB999999). Support for Windows Update: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through your usual support contacts.
