I'm trying to run/install updates to Windows Xp Pro OS using the standard
process of selecting Windows Update. Whether I select Custom or Express i
receive this error...

(1)
[Error number: 0x80240030]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view.

Searching on this error code brings this resolution:
(2)
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, install Background Intelligent Transfer Service
(BITS) client version 1.5.

I download & try to install this (BITS) and receive message like this:
(3)
Another version is installed .. to continue uninstall the previous version
through 'add/remove programs'

I look for BITS in add/remove and it's not present...

Any ideas how I can get Windows Updates to run. I appear to have run into a
deadend

~Thanks for any possible solutions~

Which version of Internet Explorer are you using?

Hi,

The reason you can't see BITS in Add/Remove programs is because:

1. It is included in the OS - BITS version 1.0 is included as part of
Windows XP.
2. It's included in the service pack - BITS version 1.2 is included in
Windows XP SP1. BITS version 2.0 is included in XP SP2.
3. You downloaded and installed a redistributable version[KBxxxxxx]. In
this case look for the relevant KB number in Add/Remove programs and
uninstall or
look for bitsuninst.exe and run the program.

Find out what version of BITS you are using by looking at the file version
of %SystemRoot%\system32\Qmgr.dll.

BITS version File version

1.0 6.0.xxxx.xxxx

1.2 6.2.xxxx.xxxx

1.5 6.5.xxxx.xxxx

2.0 6.6.xxxx.xxxx

2.5 6.7.xxxx.xxxx

3.0 7.0.xxxx.xxxx

All the best

Femi

Thanks for the info on BITS. I didn't find an uninstall, so uninstalled SP2.
I then returned to MS update and it would allow me to run the normal update
process. Things seem to be back on track now.

Thanks again
