Update Failures since SP2

I've been having problems downloading updates since I installed SP2.
Downloading completes (that is, the download bar is all green) but
installation never occurs. When I check the installation history and click
on "Failed" the Error number I get for all failed downloads is 80246002.
What the heck is going on?

I have the same problem but have the error code 80246005. I looked it up here
and one of the suggestions was to load up SP2 for IT and advanced users (the
link is somewhere on this page). This allowed me to update the security
update for SP2 but now I can not download media player 10.

Hi Guys,

I had simlar problems since installing SP2.
Looking through my WindowsUpdate.log file I found a line which read:
"Failed to delete old install directory
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\Install. This may block future
installs."

I therefore deleted the file "Install" in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download, which unsuprisingly hadn't been
accessed or modified since I installed SP2, then re-ran windows update and
the updates that had been successfully downloaded but had failed to install,
installed fine.

This has worked for me, hope it might help

Thanks Durham, but I didn't have that directory called "install" in the
location that you gave. I also don't have that line you mentioned in my
update.log file. My workaround solution is to download the latest update
manually from the Windows download center:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/s...displaylang=en and I just
type in the required update, run the search and manually save the update on
my desktop and then install.

Hi

It has been reports in the newsgroup that deleting the
SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder have solved the error
0x80246005 for some.

Please delete the DataStore folder located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

If deleting the DataStore folder doesn't work, delete the
SoftwareDistribution folder also (you need to stop the Automatic
Updates service as documented in the link above).

Hi

For error 0x80072EE2, have you tried all the things listed in
this post:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP12.phx.gbl

Also note that when using a Firewall, make sure you are not blocking
Svchost.exe (Generic host process for win32 services).

I got this too. I just switched off my virus checker and firewall and tried
the download again. It worked fine.

Hey there,
I just followed the instructions given by ex-raptor (who i believe got it
from someone else) and it seemed to work.

Click start-> run
type services.msc then press enter
Look for the Automatic Updates Service, right click it and choose to stop
Click start->run
type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution then press enter
Open the DataStorage folder and delete its contents.
Click start->run
type services.msc
right click the Automatic Update Service and choose to start
Now try running the Updates again.

Good luck!!
