John Dough posted:
“I ran proxycfg and it showed I was still setup for a proxy - even though in IE it showed I wasn't
using one.
Running "proxycfg -d" fixed it all up.”

Another user reported that clearing all cookies and temporary internet files solved his problem and
he was then able to install the update

Don't take this personally, but this is utterly ridiculous. Microsoft makes
the change to WGA to suit it's own purpose to protect against counterfeiting,
but alas, countless people can no longer run WU and all that can be offered
is to run WGA again and again or a link to the WU web page which says NOTHING
about the recurring WU problem?

Some folks have had some success with fixes that are apparently outside of
Microsoft. Kudos to those freelancers who can solve problems, but remember,
not all of us are not computer literate to the extent that we can fix our own
problems. That should me Microsoft's responsibility. What does that say for
the support Microsoft is offering?

I never had a problem with WU until now. Can't Microsoft go back to WU
before WGA, trobleshoot it, and this time, make sure it works before it's
released? And please, don't give us any nonsense about hardware or
configuration settings. I'll bet greater than 95% of the people posting this
site never had a problem until WGA came along.

If this crap happened to Bill Gates, no one would go home until the problem
was fixed.

You'll have to excuse the frustration, but Microsoft will not fix our
machines if they get compromised because we cannot effectively download and
install the updates. A comprehensive fix needs to be found.

I think everyone posting here would appreciate it if you or someone with
some significant stroke in Microsoft can raise this debacle to a higher level
so maybe, just maybe, someone in authority can deploy resources against the
problem.

MS have released a WGA Diagnostic Tool to assist those who are having
problems with the WGA update.
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012
Simply download it, run the tool, try WU again.

The original OP question related to error code 0x80244018.

100% ACK! Human beings are making mistakes, no problem. But in this
case and situation I expect from MS a removal tool which completely
uninstalls that WGA (even each and every related letter and digit from
the registry) and re-installs the "old" validation tool again. And when
the MS people have a new tool available (please not in a beta or even
only in an alpha status), then we can try again, and we are feeling
being well looked after by MS!

Congratulations! You have discovered the difference between an
entrepreneur and a modern manager.

I second this request.
Thanks for this posting.

I have already tried that more than once to no avail.

I can now download optional updates, but they will not install. I have run
the validation tool verifying authenticity.

Any other suggestions other than the ones already posted?

I must have missed it in your original message that you had already tried the
diagnostic tool and now validation has been completed and is no longer a
problem but the problem is that you are unable to install updates after they
have downloaded.

Are you receiving any error messages. Can you manually install them - if
they're downloaded they will be in the SoftwareDistribution folder under
downloads - find the relevant update/s and see if you can install it/them
from there. Other users have done this previously or in the alternative,
manually download them and install them.
