I've tried going to Microsoft update and i don't see any available download.
I turn on Automatic Update and does not get the update.
Contacted HP support and provided support did not help at all.

I think that All HP computer should receive the new update revision.

I have a HP computer with HP software and I'm affected.

Posted earlier this week in the MS Security Response Center (MSRC) blog:

"When the [revised 908531] update is re-released, it's going to be very much
targeted to people who are having the problem, or people who have not
installed MS06-015 yet. That means if you have already installed MS06-015
and are not having the problem, there's no action here for you. Windows
Update, Microsoft Update, and Automatic Update will have detection logic
built into them to only offer the revised update (which essentially includes
the reg key fix) to those customers who either don't have MS06-015 or are
having the problem."

If Automatic Updates did not offer you the revised version of 908531, the
above-referenced detection logic didn't determine that your machine needed
it.

If you'd like to see if the revised version would resolve your problems,
uninstall "Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)" via Add/Remove
Programs and reboot. Once you've done so, Automatic Updates should offer
you the revised version, as would Windows Update website.

Let us know how you make out.

URG!! Here we go again!

I have a valid license of Windows XP Pro on my 2.5 year old COmpaq business
Notebook EVO N620c, with sticker and all. Same problem as last time.
Fails to install. Yes DirectX is enabled and fully open, no AV, or firewalls.
Same thing.

So how long with the "Microsoft Bug denial" phase be, and how many of us
will have to be insulted by some MS employee that "can't move Mount Fuji".
Geez.

Can we skil MS employees insulting paying customers and have the patch file
like last time. Please feel free to email me at my contact email address.
I will do whatever you want. Send a picture of the bottom of the notebook
with label, receipts, whatever. But this is gett so annoying.

Linux is looking better every day..

I did uninstall KB908531 before posting this and then let the automatic
update download/install it but still have the issues here's the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Wind ows XP\SP3\KB908531

I think that KB908531 should have v2 next to it if it's a revised version?

Nope, not for the registry entry you're posting, but have a look for
the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached

If you can find _all_ of the following values in there, KB908531v2 is
installed on your machine:

{750FDF0E-2A26-11D1-A3EA-080036587F03} {000214E8-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401
{1e9b04fb-f9e5-4718-997b-b8da88302a47} {000214e8-0000-0000-c000-000000000046} 0x401
{1e9b04fb-f9e5-4718-997b-b8da88302a48} {000214e8-0000-0000-c000-000000000046} 0x401
{1cdb2949-8f65-4355-8456-263e7c208a5d} {000214e6-0000-0000-c000-000000000046} 0x401
{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401

In case you still have problems after applying KB908531v2, you may want
to try ShellExView http://nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html to determine,
which shell extensions causes the problems in conjunction with KB908531
you're seeing.

Bye,
Freudi

Exactly what fails to install? Please be precise, so we can help you
properly.
