Having downloaded SP2 from windows update last week, I am being prompted that
there are further updates available. U have tried several times to download
these latest updates but each time system says download failed.

The updates in question are
1.Cumulative Security Update for IE for Windows SP2 (KB 834707)
2.Microsoft GDI + Detection Tool (KB873374)
3.Critical update for Office XP on Windows XP SP2 (KB885884)

Is it that the earlier download of SP2 has messed up further updates, or are
these already in SP2 or is it some other problem?

Would be grateful for any assistance

Hi

In your windows folder, please look for the following log file and
see if it gives any clue to why the installations fails:

KB834707.log

If KB834707.log does not exist, look in WindowsUpdate.log, also
located in the windows folder.

In worst case, you might have a incomplete SP2 installation.

In the KB article
"You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure entry
point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link library
Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038 security update"
at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=888162

see

"Q1: I do not think my computer is in an "incomplete Windows XP SP2
state." How can I know for sure?"

If one of the two methods to check the SP2 installation indicates that
it is incomplete, you should uninstall SP2 and then install SP2 again
(that is also described in the KB article above).

Thanks for your response. Could not find KB834707.log anywhere. But under wu
update, i found an error message relating to the attempts i made to download
the 3 further updates - it reads 80072ee2. Does this shed more light on the
problem or should i just uninstall and try install again??

Hi

For error 0x80072EE2, please take a look at this post:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP12.phx.gbl

Also note that when using a Firewall, make sure you are not blocking
Svchost.exe (Generic host process for win32 services).
