On your new install did you install mobo chipset & other hw drivers from
supplied cd's or did you rely on default win drivers?
And did you connect to a broadband connection with an unpatched / protected
sys?

Running WinXP with 128mb will be a painfully slow experience.
I let my kids play on a 1.8 with 768mb, in win2k, and that's slow enough

Its estimated that it takes on average 11 minutes for an unprotected sys
connected to broadband to be infected. (If however you are behind a NAT
firewall you should be allright)
1) You should use the sys manu (Dell) chipset and other drivers, not rely on
win default drivers - even if it shows no problems - and never use winupdate
for drivers.
2) Since you have access to another sys you might want to download and burn
to cd the Administrative latest sp update.
3) The winxp firewall is turned off, by default, on installation making it
likely that your PC has been compromised.
4) I believe Trend Micro have a download you can burn to cd in order to scan
your sy

Forgive me if this is duplicated, but I got somewhat sidetracked
