Update frequency uncontrolled

Using WXP HE SP2. Everytime I go on-line, Update loads and checks my system.
I've tried changing the date, the frequency, and turning it off but none of
these has an effect. How can I get it to load only once a week, regardless
of the number of times I go on-line?
