I have very similar problems. Windows Update hangs during the "Initializing
installation..." phase (Auto update and manual update as well) Creating a
system restore point or restoring it does not finish either. I can however
restore the system to a restore point from safe mode. I guess, it is because
during safe mode the restore cannot be undone, and hence no new restore point
is created. I'm using Norton Internet Security as well, but I haven't blocked
any extra ports. I also have errors listed in the event log, that two
services (one of them is WWW Publishing) hung on starting, but I checked them
and they are running. (they just cannot start within the two minutes period,
that's why the event log is created)
Any ideas, what the problem could be?
