Update hangs on "Checking for the latest updates for your computer

I just installed XP on a reformatted disk on an older ThinkPad (circa 2000).
Not sure of the version of XP, but it is a couple of years old. I went to
Windows Update, got the update software installed. Now, when I get to
Checking for the latest updates for your computer", it just keeps checking
and checking and checking.

I did the stop update, start update (with various other run executions)
suggested by a MS tech person to another guy, but this did no good at all.

Any further suggestions?

Try just letting it run for 10 minutes. I also thought my PC had "hung",
but letting it run and run and run will lead eventually to a dialog box asking
whether you want a standard or custom choice of patches to download.
This problem *may* have coincided with the installations of Visual Studio.NET
and SQL Server Express a few months ago. BTW, my PC has a 450MHz PII
with 384MB of DRAM and 8GB of empty space to play in on an ATA/133
hard drive.
