Update hangs computer

After Tuesday, 14th November Update hangs my computer so badly I have to
reboot. Update hangs at 0%. I turned off auto update and did it manually with
the same results. As Update searches for udates the green bar moves left to
right--forever. If I move the cursor the system goes non-responsive. In
either case processor goes to 100% utilization and slows machine to a crawl.
Ctr-alt-del allows me to stop the process, but it takes a long time before it
will release and allow me to reboot, also unusually long. I have what I
believe is a fairly normal installation on XP Pro, a Compaq Presario laptop.
No strange software, a gig of RAM--should be fine. It's a new machine, but it
took October's Tuesday updates w/o a problem. My other machine, also XP Pro,
an older Dell, works fine.

What could possibly be causing this hang up? TIA. Michael
