Well, I just casually went to the update website like normal, had my computer
checked, had the updates downloaded, waited for them to be installed. It got
to the 6th installation out of 8 and got hung up at about 75%, so I clicked
cancel after it did nothing for 5 minutes. "Cancelling..." came up in the
box, but it never closed or did anything, so I decided to bring up the Task
Manager, go to "Processes", found "iexplore.exe", which was the only one up
since I had one IE window open, and ended the process. The browser/updater
are gone. I reopen IE, repeat the process, but NOW it hangs when it scans for
updates ("Checking for the latest updates for your computer..."). The green
bar moves like normal, but it says "Done" in the bottom left corner of IE,
and the working bar in the bottom right-ish corner isn't there. It just
sticks to that one page with the bar moving left to right, left to right,
nonstop.

I did follow instructions that someone earlier had posted to a question, and
deleted what was in my "Downloads" folder under
c:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution." Didn't help at all.

Also, I am using a firewall that usually causes problems like this, but the
process that I go through to fix the problems (that works 99.999999% of the
time) doesn't help this either. Any ideas?

Try re-registering these files then, open IE and try WU again:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv
