Everytime I start IE it takes me to the update site (depite SpyBot's best
effort to stop the maneuver). How do I stop this annoying behavior? Or, is
is something that I have have to live with (in which case why?).

It's a nasty trick but SpyBot makes it easy to fix.

1. Go to SpyBot > Mode > Advanced Mode and select "yes" in the warning
window.

2. Open the Tools window and double click "Browser Pages" to view all of the
pages currently used either for searches or as your homepage.

3. Find the entry that hijacks your homepage to the Microsoft Update site.
You may have to check a few of the addresses in your browser to determine
which one is the culprit.

4. Highlight the entry that is causing the trouble. Then select the Change
button in the upper window. In the Change Address window, type in the full
address of the homepage you prefer. Close that window and try opening IE.
That should handle the problem immediately.

Cheers!
