upon reviewing my update history i noted that several updates were reported
as having failed. However these same updates are listed in the "add or remove
programs " window accessed via "conrol panel" as installed.! Are these
updates installed or not?

In other words: try to uninstall if it wants to than it is installed since
you can not uninstall what is not installed

i would be happy to try that. however i cant find how to install updates that
have failed on the update history page. clicking the name just gives a
description of the update and clicking on the status icon gives advice on
error code and troubleshooting options . how can i install?

I am not talking about installing updates: I am talking about trying to
uninstall the updates in your software list of which win updates state they
failed.

If you are able to start the uninstall that means that they are installed
despite win update says they failed.

you wil be asked if you really want to remove the update if so say no and
you know that that update is really installed, how else could it be? You can
not uninstall what is not installed now can you?
