'Update History' unchanged after System Restore

Latest recommended updates (including an Intel update) resulted in Vista
Experience score plummetting and Aero disappearing. After System Restore,
all back to normal and 'Installed Updates' confirms updates removed. 'Update
History', though, still shows these updates as being successfully INSTALLED.
I want to experiment by installing these updates 1 by 1 but 'Windows Update'
says there are no new important updates available for my computer. Seems
that this is because 'Update History' still says these updates are installed.
How can I correct 'Update History' so that these "important updates" are
relisted as "available"?

Clearing the History of Windows Updates - rename the file DataStore.edb (which is stored
in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore) to DataStoreedb.old

You can check which updates are installed on your computer by -
Start button || Control Panel || Programs
Under Programs and Features - click View installed updates.

Many thanks for your prompt replies - very impressive. I'm afraid you
overestimated my technical knowledge but I really appreciate the effort. As
it happens, at latest shutdown all updates were installed - this wasn't the
first time I'd shut down since the restore. Maybe this is something to do
with hidden updates, which I don't understand (who hides them in the first
place?). I have more reading to do, I fear! Oh, and the computer's working
fine after the updates this time - go figure!
