Update hits dead end

In trying to use the Update manually, I get the 'checking for updates' screen
but it never comes back with resolution--the rest of the screen just stays
blank and it just sits there forever.
When I go check troubleshooting, FAQ, etc. I can get lists to click on, but
clicking on items for more information, I get the same thing--no response.
It looks like there's a popup-blocker or something else at work here to stop
it, but I disable everything I know of, I go into Internet Options on IE6 and
MS is a trusted site, etc.
This worked for me in the past (last time probably about 4 months ago). And
come to think of it, I haven't seen an Automatic Update message for quite a
while as well, where I was getting them on an occasional basis. AU is
enabled in the Control Panel....
Anybody have any clues on this?

I'm running XP Home, IE6. I have McAfee software but I also exit it when I
try to do the Update...

If you could also please reply to I would appreciate
it.

Hi

You could try the steps in this post to try to get WU to work:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP14.phx.gbl

Also, if you have Windows XP SP2 installed, check that the
WuWebControlClass is enabled in Internet Explorer:

If nothing of the above worked, try the steps in this post:

Here are some more steps you can try if the above was of no help:

"Software update incomplete" error message when you visit the
Windows Update Web site

You cannot install some updates or programs
