Update icon never goes away

The icon that shows updates are ready to install is always there. When I
click on it to install it comes up with the window which has express install
and custom install, so I click on the express install. It then goes away for
a fraction of a second, then I get a pop up that says updstes are ready to
install, and the icon is back. How can I fix it?
