Critical Update Q833989 is repeatedly asked for, though it IS installed and
also listed at the About Explorer screen. I have unsuccessfully tried a lot
of tips found at different sites about Windows Update loops.

My profile:
Win 98 SE (Swedish)
MSIE version
6.0.2800.1106;SP1;Q837009;Q832894;q313829;Q831167; Q823353;Q867801;Q834707;Q833989;
Hard disks c, d, e, and f
Program files on f: \program
Common prog files f:\program\vanliga filer
Most of personal settings c:\windows\profiles\simon\... (nowadays I am the
only user of this computer)

Any suggestions are welcome

First, check that your existing patches are correctly installed - download
and run the Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com
reinstall any flagged patches (hotfixes), and then see whether things right
themselves.

As to this URL I don't see why you pointed me to it? I have been on NGs
since early 90's and have never been accused of writing bad posts, on the
contrary. But I have been used to get rather prompt answers to clearly put
questions. And especially when, as I did, included an exact description of my
machine and environment. Period.

Thanks for your help

It was a standard part of my sig - which I've now changed anyhow, since it's
not strictly applicable on UseNet - nothing personal, I assure you!

Glad the link was able to point you in the right direction - good luck!
