Update install fails - how do I force re-download the update

My hard disk just died and I've had to reinstall WinXP (original version) on
my new disk, and I'm trying to bring my system up to SP2 with Windows Update
over my slow dial-up connection. But I've run into a hitch:

While I was downloading a bunch (22!) of critical security updates, my
system hung when the screen saver kicked in. I rebooted and set windows
update to finish downloading & installing the 22 updates. It picked up about
where it left off, and eventually successfully installed 21 of the 22 updates.

But one security update always fails when I try to install it. The one that
was downloading when my system hung. But I thought perhaps it was my IE
security settings or because I had disabled some service, but after repeated
experimentation with lowering all the explorer settings and activating the
disabled services, I'm pretty sure at this point it's gotta be a corrupted
update file, since I'm out of other things to try.

Windows Update won't offer me any other major updates like SP1 or SP2, (I
assume it's insisting I get that failed update first), so can't update my
system any further until this is resolved.

Is there any way to force windows update to re-download the file? There are
no files in the windows update directory to delete, and I've tried deleting
all temporary internet files and offline content, but windows update still
won't re-download the bad update. Where is that sucker hiding?

Could there be some other reason for the update failure? The security
update seemes to be an update to the network DDE service. I don't have any
problems starting or stopping that service currently, and I don't think it's
in use by anything on my system. I've also tried making sure no firewall was
running and even tried disconnecting from my dial-up connection before I hit
the final install button for the update, all with no luck.

Thanks,
-Bryon

You can download the missing update either from the Catalog or search for the
download

Catalog
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp
How to Download Windows Updates and Drivers from the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323166

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you want,
Click the “Go To Download Basket” link. Type in or browse to the location where you
want the updates saved to and then Click the “Download Now” button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

BTW You don't need to install SP1 or any other updates before installing Service Pack
2?
Service Pack 2 is cumulative and includes all prior Critical Updates. You don't have
to worry about uninstalling any previous updates.

Hi, thanks for the info. I thought I had to install those other fixes first,
because Windows Update wasn't offing to let me download SP2 (or SP1 or
anything else),
just those security updates and thats it.

I went to the catalog site and have a question: What version of the software
should I select? I have installed the original Windows XP Pro (bought when
it first came out). The list has selections for WinXP, WinXP Home, and WinXP
Pro, all with RTM, SP1, and SP2 variants. I'm not sure what RTM means, but
I don't have SP1 or SP2, so I picked that, but the Win XP Pro RTM choice did
not seem to offer the SP2 download. When I picked Win XP RTM, it did have
the SP2 download, but I'm not sure if it's the right one.

Also, a 266MB download at dialup rates will take forever. Is there any
provision to stop the download and resume it later?

Thanks!
-Bryon

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
Windows XP Service Pack 2

I have a free download manager that serves my needs located at
http://www.metaproducts.com/mp/default.asp
When I click the link to download, the download manager comes up - I didn't proceed
any further.
The above link to Windows XP Service Pack 2 is the one you need.

If you prefer order it on CD.
