Update Install at shutdown hangs.

Last night when I shut down, the usual final screen came up but with
alternating notices: first, "Installing Update 1 of 4"; then: "Do not turn
off or unplug...it
will turn off automatically". Had never seen this in the 4 months I've
been running XP. The problem was that the notices, still about installing 1
of 4, kept repeating for over half an hour. I finally turned off the power.
This morning I checked the usual way for updates and the 4 were in the
recommended list
from Microsoft. I installed them ok.

Does what happened indicate that something needs to be reset or fixed?

Same problem here. Locked at step 1. I also shut down and rebooted. My PC
is set to auto download updates and it downloaded new ones and asked me if it
could shutdown and reboot. I allowed it to. This reboot worked. However I the
did a normal shutdown (power off) and it hung again (no update messages ). I
then did a controlled boot F8 and selected safe mode with command prompt. No
problems here. Shut down worked following that and it now seems fine. I then
did the usual virus check and Ad-aware check. Nothing found.

Any thing else I should check ?

One of my clients reported having the same update message and left his PC
alone to update and shut down when done. Now when he boots it up is goes
through the normal boot sequence and appears to hang with a black screen. At
one point he got a message about some windows DLL file not being compatable.

Anyone got an answer for this one?

I had the same problem yesterday and today (although not the original
problem reported by Marty3). I thought it might be a display driver problem
but reinstalling the drivers from Safe Mode didn't work. I found a temporary
solution by 'restoring to a previous configuration that works' at the F8
boot menu, but the solution was short lived. Eventually I did a repair
install which appeared at first to solve the problem. However at the next
bootup Windows reinstalled the Update and I was back to square one. I
decided the Update was not worth the hassle so I unchecked 'Auto Update' but
unfortunately Windows has already downloaded the update and keeps
reinstalling it with the same disastrous result.

Anyone know where WinXP stores the update files prior to installing? so that
I can delete them and regain my sanity.

Hi

Clean out the Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder)
located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You may need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the Download folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).
