I had the same problem yesterday and today (although not the original
problem reported by Marty3). I thought it might be a display driver problem
but reinstalling the drivers from Safe Mode didn't work. I found a temporary
solution by 'restoring to a previous configuration that works' at the F8
boot menu, but the solution was short lived. Eventually I did a repair
install which appeared at first to solve the problem. However at the next
bootup Windows reinstalled the Update and I was back to square one. I
decided the Update was not worth the hassle so I unchecked 'Auto Update' but
unfortunately Windows has already downloaded the update and keeps
reinstalling it with the same disastrous result.
Anyone know where WinXP stores the update files prior to installing? so that
I can delete them and regain my sanity.
