Update installation failed

XP sp2, failed to install 3 updates. When clicking the failed icon, nothing
happens, so do not know what to do or what follows.

Try this first ... go to Start > Run > type in

cmd
Click OK or press Enter

At the prompt, type in and then press Enter after each command
[please note the spaces]

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system and see if the updates install now.
If not, Start > Run > type in or copy and paste the below into the Open:
line and then click OK or press Enter

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the log for the most recent entry.
Now work your way back up the log until you locate a FATAL or WARNING
entry.
Copy and paste the sections just before and just after such entries into
your reply please.

*PLEASE* include only the most *recent* FATAL and/or WARNING entries.

Hello Mow,

I've been having problems trying to install 5 out of 8 updates since this
afternoon. I've already tried the command prompts that you've listed.

I'm not sure if you would rather I start a new thread or piggyback onto this
one.

Howdy Alan,

Since the OS on your system is Vista it would be unwise to apply advice
given for an XP system, as Marco's is.

80070005 is an Access Denied error message which could be related to:

1) Malware being present on the system which changes Permissions to deny
the system's ability to update
2) Security software [antivirus/security suite/firewall/pop/cookie
blocker,etc]. EX: running 2 firewalls at the same time; antivirus
software changing Permissions or, guarding system files/registry entries
in order to make the system "more secure", etc.

Suggest you start a new thread with the error code [ 80070005 ] and
Vista version as the Subject.
In the meantime, please take a look at a fellow MVP's writeup on
troubleshooting Permissions issues when installing updates/software :

Hello Mow,

I did start a thread this morning, and PA Bear responded to it with some
suggestions.

It turns out that the problem I was having with downloading was caused by my
having TeaTimer turned on in SpyBot S&D.

I turned it off on both machines and the updates downloaded and installed
without any further problem.

been associated with the 80070020 error code. Is this the latest version
of Spybot ? IIRC, the latest version at least informs you during it's
installation that TeaTimer and SDHelper is Enabled and you can uncheck
the boxes [ or is that check them ? <w> ].
