Update installation fails unless domain admin

Our Windows XP Pro SP2 users are experiencing installation failures of
automatic updates. The updates download just fine, but installation fails.
Users are local administrators of their machines. I can log on with domain
admin credentials, and install the updates from the Windows update site. Help!
