Update installer running without purpose?

I constantly get "new updates to install" pop-up messages, but when I click
on it there's no listed update and program begins a "preparing to install"
loop. I have Vista, have checked for viruses, trojans & adware, and according
to update history have successfully loaded all known updates. My system keeps
"sticking" - not sure if its related.

If you run Windows Update manually (via the Start menu), are any updates
offered and installable?

I just read on windowssecret.com that Microsoft has a problem with Windows
Update that has not been resolved yet. You might want to read the article.
