I need to install XP SP2 on my computer and the only way to do it seems to be
windows update. However, while reviewing the update history file for my
computer, I see that Security Update KB83572 has been installed every day for
the last 6 months! I think once is sufficient. However, since there is no
mention of this problem in the discussion group, I assume I have a deeper
problem. In addition, windows update is NOT even telling me that I need SP2
(I know I don't have it). It is not contained in the "hidden" updates
either. Does anyone have an suggestions?

Thanks!

How to troubleshoot Windows Update or Microsoft Update when you are repeatedly
offered an update
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=910339

Windows Update already installed
http://www.updatexp.com/windows-upda...installed.html

Windows Update says the update is still needed
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/needagain.htm

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows Update and is
not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

How to Check Which Version of Windows You Are Running

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Run dialog box, type winver
3. Click OK.

A dialog box displays the version that you are running.

Thanks for the hints.. much appreciated. I am running version 5.1 build
2600.xpclnt_qfe.021108-2107 . I assume the build identifies one made for
this model of Dell computer. Anyway, I will follow the paths you left and
investigate them when I get a little more time. The T.V. media lead is
interesting because I did have a small bout with spyware awhile back. I
downloaded the beta Microsoft spyware utility and it seem to clean up
everything ... except .... occasionally one will return .. undoubtedly
reincarnated by an obscure mechanism known only to the spyware writers. I
will investigate the T.V. media lead most thoroughly.

Again, thanks.
