Update Interrupted

I was upgrading a friend's laptop to XP SP2 using Windows Update and during
the install, the laptop lost power. Now when I try to boot, Windows does not
boot completely. I get the desktop wallpaper, but no icons or anything else.
And I can't access anything, no start menu, nothing. It just sits there
with the wallpaper. I tried system recover and that didn't help. ANY
IDEAS???

Press Control+Alt+Delete keys, (The dialog box for Windows Task Manager opens)
Select the File menu, then New Task (Run), (The dialog box for Create New Task opens)
Type in "Explorer" (without the quotes)
Press OK button.

Hopefully Windows Explorer restarts with the Taskbar and Start button.
