Since downloading the host of recent updates both critical and non-critical,
I've successfully installed all with one glaring exception.
KB885626 downloaded with the rest of the herd but has since gone maverick
and refuses to install completely. The progress bar "stalls" at app. 55% and
does not move further no matter how long it's left to its own devices, (the
longest duration so far is about 13 hours.) When this happens, I cannot
seem to cancel the installation. The cancel button "clicks" just fine, but
I'm then presented with a perpetual message about "cancelling installation,"
which refuses to disappear-as does the window showing installation progress
or, more properly, the lack thereof.
Since this installation difficulty began, I've noticed problems with the
windows for certain processes closing when the cancel, the X, or the OK
buttons are clicked. The program, or function may have ceased, but I'm stuck
with the window still on screen.
Also noticed, in the last day or so is a .net framework error message which
pops up when/if I try to shut things down or to restart the computer. (Not
the "such-and-such program needs more time to shut down.... end
now/cancel.... lose unsaved information" message----this is a different
message altogether. the window it pops up on/in looks almost like a DOS
window.
Even the Add/Remove Program option is of no use... the window pops up but
never "populates"...(also a new development since KB885626 reared its head.)
I'm unable to install the download, to redownload it, (just in case it
didn't download properly or in case an individual file was or has become
corrupted,) or to delete the blasted thing. I'm figuratively between the
boat and the dock and am unable to jump to either destination with any degree
of finesse, success or finality--and my posterior's getting perilously near
the H2O.
I'm consistently presented with the nag to install the aforementioned
downloaded update, but am just as consistenly unable to do so successfully or
to get rid of the nag message. If I make the mistake of trying to install,
all other functions on my computer grind to a halt and I'm unable even to
shut the thing off without using the power button.
I've tried the remedies mentioned in various help files all to no avail; and
have endured not one but two extremely frustrating calls to the so-called
Microsoft Customer Service department just to be told that my alternatives
are to email Microsoft... (already done, and STILL awaiting a reply,) to
contact the computer's manufacturer/assembler about the issue, (NOT
acceptable since it is not THEIR update and it's not a hardware problem and
it's not a software problem per se, at least it wasn't until I tried to
install the update,) or to pay a minimum of $35 to speak to a real person
about this problem, (also NOT acceptable since it is neither MY fault NOR the
local computer shop's fault the update will not install and is now causing
previously unexperienced difficulties.)
Can anyone help?
