This update has attempted to install every time I've switched on my PC
for
months now. Any way of getting rid of it or even installing the update?

Have even downloaded it from MS, but when I run it it says the file is
corrupt and unreadable.

Have also tried this

but

Have done that then tried running the update 1st from the icon that
sits
permanently in the systray (for past 4 months). That was unsuccessful.

Then by downloading and saving WindowsXP-KB898461-x86-ENU.exe then
running
it.

As before I get ther message that the file is corrupt.

Hi,

I just now downloaded the English version from the link above, and the
installer runs just fine for me.

Please clear the cache in your browser, and see if that helps. If it
doesn't, I suspect there is a proxy server that gives you the corrupt
version. Then an option would be to download the update from another
computer (preferable on another network), and transfer the update to
your computer using e.g. a floppy disk, USB stick or CD.

Try to discover how far it is getting before that messge is issued.
For example, if it has upacked all the files and started the install
there could be clues in the install log. In addition, I would try
running FileMon (freeware from SysInternals) to monitor file accesses
made by the update executable. E.g. if it is called update.exe
just use update as the input filter. Etc.

Often we find that error messages just give a clue about their context
rather than give us some message to take literally. I suspect that that
could be the case here. E.g. I imagine that you also could get such
a message if the modules being used to unpack the file were broken.
The result would be the same: the calling routine would detect that it
was getting garbage out. Rather than saying that it may just be giving
the most likely reason for that event.
