says on the history of update page.

I have windows xp home edition.

Open the KB920685.log located in the WINDOWS directory [folder] with
Notepad.
Copy and paste the contents into your reply, please.

Also, check to see the state of the Indexing Service
Go to Start > Run > type in

services.msc

Click OK or press Enter
Locate Indexing Service in the left frame
Double click on it
What's showing for " Startup type: " ?

Go to the very bottom of the KB920685.log
Include the last two sections of it ... they are divided by lines that
look like this -
================================================== ================

Copy and paste the last two sections demarked by said line

Here's where the installation is failing :

> 8.672: AnalyzeForBranching: Getting file version for file
>
> c:\windows\system32\query.dll failed with error 0x00000057

The error may be stemming from the installed antivirus software
interfering with the update's attempt to determine the file version
[*highly likely*] or the version of the file indicated might be incorrect.

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Using Windows Explorer [ Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows
Explorer ] navigate to the WINDOWS\system32 folder
Locate query.dll
*Right* click it and choose Properties
Click the Version tab
query.dll should be at version 5.1.2600.2935

Now check the version of query.dll located in WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
Is it the same version as the one located in system32 ?
Please post back with the version numbers of query.dll located in the
above mentioned locations, Karen.

Which antivirus program/security suite is installed ?

Download KB920685 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
SAVE it, do run it while the browser is open, please.
When the download is finished close any other open programs, too.
Pause all of Avast providers by *right* clicking the Avast icon in the
System Tray on the Taskbar and choose Pause Providers
Pause each one that's listed

Now run WindowsXP-KB920685-x86-ENU.exe
Allow the system to restart if prompted to

Did that get it installed, Becky ?
[ Check to ensure that Avast's providers are running now, too, by
hovering the cursor over the Avast icon on the System Tray ]

I did see that the version has changed also to 5.1.2600.2935

I also have a question would this effect any of my downloads? I know just
for example i go onto shockwave and want to play text twist and the window to
timed or untimed doesn't come up with picutres just an red x in the left hand
side. I am also having problems emailing pictures also. Just didn't know
if this could affect it. I know when i was running the update when it asked
about copying windows system 32 it failed to copy all of it and I checked ok
to proceed. Could that have something to do with it maybe and if so how
could i fix it. Thanks
